So, Im working on a secondary project where most of the characters have unique magic abilities. One of the characters is a dwarf. Should he learn magic? I'm not entirely sure on this subject. Your thoughts?

Dwarves aren't usually adept at magic; actually their lack of magic is so extreme that magic can't even damage them as much as it would someone else. That dullness to magic has been a staple of dwarves for a while.

That's why if you make your Dwarf something like a battlemage, then I think people might see it as a breath of fresh air. Add your own lore on top of the already existing one; it's your creative vision, so make what you think would be the best experience for the player.

If I made a dwarf, I'd probably make him some kind of tank that has defensive spells from the Earth that his people have dug for centuries; just as an example though, the only limit is you Razz

I have PLENTY of my own lore in this story. It has the classic dwarves and elves, but the details of everything are different. I even created 4 races of my own creation, Corian, ("Traditional" mages), zLeren, (Light-footed, summoning magics, katanas etc.), Fortuna (Vampiric, Ice-magic, stealthy) and Delrik ("Elemental Application" magic, they apply the elements to objects to alter their molecular make-up or whatever (lol) I havnt fully developed that potion of it. I also use Humans, Dwarves and Elves. but, I suppose with 5 of the 7 races using magic, the human and the dwarf should go without it to even the scales a bit.

On a second note, I have a LARGE potion of this story written, I just need to type it and then I will share it with the rest of yall =D

I've always seen dwarves as more of a rogue-type, but no one is going to complain if they do any sort of magic. If you can back up your facts with history or something, there's no reason anyone should question it.

If you want, you could just justify it by making a new name for the dwarves so they're not associated with traditional beliefs.

Based on my experience in D&D, Dwarves only are ever Warrior-type characters that don't require wisdom or charisma. I know that "Gray Dwarves" can use magic, so if you want to make that exception go ahead.

Also, like AvA said, you could definitely just use some kind of history to back it up, like how some of the Altmer became the Dunmer (ES reference here). Maybe even make those Dwarven classes you mentioned completely different races.

Thanks. I've solved the problem. I stated early on in the story that Dwarves have a metal called "Ebrozite" in thier blood, like how humans have iron. This Ebrozite is an "anti-magic conductor" that is like a conductor, but backwards. Since the blood flows through the Dwarf's body, the effects cover his whole body. because of the magic nullifying effects of the Ebrozite in the dwarf's blood, he cannot use magic nor be damaged by it. I also plan on using this magic nullifying effect later, but as a weapon used against a mage who gets affected by it and thus cannot cast magic for a period of time. Ive been writing it fairly diligently, however I just need to sit my ass down and type it xDD

why would race matter? who says that out of an entire race, 1 person cant learn magic? or a group for that matter. just make it few and far between, or maybe a genetic defect that allows them to use magic, like, say, an Ebrozyte deficiency.

(not to cut on yours specifically, just saying in general, but) this is the problem with so many games/stories/movies now days, they severely limit an entire race to one thing, one religion, one way of life, etc. so unrealistic. diversity makes an increadable and much more believable story.

Well actually it wouldn't be that dwarves would be limited to something benign. IE; in D&D the only races that can be Illusionists are Humans and Gnomes, and Illusionists can at later levels be one of the most ridiculously powerful magic-based classes in the game.
He could make it so that Dwarves can be a special kind of Warrior or Ranger, making them more like tanks. Therefore, they would be really useful as a go-in-alone or bring-backup kind of race, instead of having to do with a weapon and just thwacking people with it. Besides, in a few games Warrior-type classes have special magic-like attacks that truly kick ass, and who's to say they can't use magic weapons?

Exactly. I have it set up so that Dwarves use enchantments, since the magic doesn't originate from them, but in the rune used for the enchantment. The dwarf will make some throwing knives that return when thrown because of the "Return" Drawf Rune engraved on its blade.
